Why Is RAM So Expensive Now?

Short answer: the world's memory is being pulled toward AI data centers, and home PCs get what's left. That's the DRAM squeeze. Here's what happened, in plain English, with sources.

1. The price jump

A 32GB DDR5-6000 kit, the standard gaming spec, cost about $75 in early 2025. BottleneckPC put the same capacity at about $485 on Amazon on October 21, 2026 (BottleneckPC, Black Friday 2026 PC parts guide). On November 1, 2026, the lowest 32GB DDR5-6000 kit we verified was $474.99 at Amazon (our price table).

Tom's Hardware, which tracks this kit daily, reported the cheapest 32GB DDR5-6000 kit at $449.97 on October 14, 2026, and said RAM prices are up more than 500% since last year (Tom's Hardware, Oct 14, 2026).

2. Where the memory went

The same factories make memory for home PCs and for data-center servers, and AI servers want huge amounts of it. When Micron announced it was leaving the consumer market, it said so directly:

"The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments."

Micron press release, Dec 3, 2025

Micron kept shipping Crucial consumer products through February 2026. Fewer makers selling to people like us, more demand from data centers: prices go one way.

3. The quote that started the flag

On the Cheeky Pint podcast (episode 39), Sam Altman said:

"But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

He was making a case about where AI should run. A lot of PC owners took it personally. Hence: Come and Take It RAM.

4. What to do about it

  • Buy the capacity you need, not the sale. BottleneckPC's advice is not to upgrade RAM just for a Black Friday discount.
  • Consider DDR4 if your board takes it. 32GB DDR4-3200 was $229.99 at Amazon on Nov 1, 2026.
  • Buy from the store or the brand's official storefront. Unknown sellers are where fake memory turns up.
  • Keep what you have. Your RAM. Your rules.

Nobody can say when prices come down. Tom's Hardware reports industry warnings that the shortage could run well into next year or longer.

FAQ

Why is RAM so expensive now?

Memory makers are sending more of their supply to AI data centers. Micron said in December 2025 that AI-driven data-center growth caused a surge in memory demand and that it was exiting its Crucial consumer business. Less supply for home PCs means higher prices.

How much has DDR5 RAM gone up?

BottleneckPC (October 21, 2026) put a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit at about $485 on Amazon, against about $75 in early 2025. Tom's Hardware (October 14, 2026) reported RAM prices up more than 500% since last year.

Will RAM prices go down?

Nobody can promise that. Tom's Hardware reported that industry figures warn the memory shortage could last well into next year or longer.

What did Sam Altman say about RAM?

On the Cheeky Pint podcast, episode 39, he said: "But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."
